Christmas 2008

We had a great Christmas. We spent Christmas Eve at Mitch's grandma's house. The poem/gift giving was funny as usual. Mitch's uncle, Lamar, got a HUGE U of U poster that said "CTR Choose the Red." It was hilarious. You have to know the guy.
Since I couldn't talk Mitch into opening our gifts any sooner (I wanted to open them on Monday), we opened ours to each other on Christmas Eve. Mitch got me lots of shoes, a teach-yourself-to-play-the-drums-book and a few other things. I got him a work bench for the garage, some running attire, and some x-box games. After we opened our gifts, we read the Christmas story from the Bible. That was nice to refocus on what all the craziness is about.
We spent Christmas morning at my grandma's. We had a delicious breakfast and opened gifts. Then we got in the car and headed up to North Ogden to Mitch's grandma's and then his parents. We were WAY too spoiled by everyone. Mitch's parents seriously go all out. We seriously just barely fit all of the gifts they gave us in Mitch's car. It was piled up to the roof! It was a great Christmas and we were tired at the end of the day. I love the Christmas season and I was sad when it was over. I don't even care about the gifts, I just like spending time with everyone, decorating the house, and having everyone be so happy and cheerful. I wish it could be Christmas all year round.

On Saturday Mitch and I got in the car and drove straight through to Pasadena, California to visit my uncle Alex. This is me and Alex at his house.
Here I am with Alex's dogs, Howard and Logan. They are as handsome as their owner.

Here's Alex with the blanket my parents gave him. It has a pic of Alex and his dogs on it. He thought it was awesome.
It was a LONG drive, but well worth it. We were able to do a lot of fun things while we were there. We went to a botanical garden, a hockey game at the Staples center, the beach at Santa Monica, the Peterson car museum, ate at some great restaurants and just saw the town. I think my favorite part was the motorcycle ride on Alex's Ducati. My uncle is a pretty crazy driver so I was freaked out at first, but I actually enjoyed it. Mitch liked it too and said he wants a motorcylcle now. You'll have to let us know if you think we look the type. I think Mitch looks like a Bad-A. Ha,ha. Here's Mitch on the bike and me all suited up.Alex also drove us in his sweet Jeep Wrangler to the river bottom where they used to do a lot of car races (now you just see it in the movies). It was a little scary going down there cuz it was definitely in a bad part of town, but it was fun. We only drove down there for a minute or two and then left. I wish I had taken a picture of that ... We walked around the rose bowl and took Alex's dogs, Howard and Logan. We brought home an old tandum bicycle my uncle had restored. It was originally my grandparents. It's a Schwinn Twinn. It's pretty hilarious looking. We had to take off the tires, handlebars, and seats to get it home because it's so heavy. I can't wait to ride it this spring. Thanks, Alex, for giving it to us!
It was a great trip. It was in the 70s while we were there and really sunny. I told Mitch the whole 13 hour ride home how much I love it there and how I want to move there. Someday... in the mean time we'll have to go visit Alex again. Next time we'll fly though. Here we are at the hockey game. The camera flash seemed to only affect me and not Alex. Ha,ha.And now I get to brag about my uncle. Alex is a super nice guy. He's very smart. He's also very handsome. He is an amazing artist. He went to a very prestigious design school in Cali and now he designs cars for Volkswagen. He is one of ten designers. He recently designed VW's Baja 1000 truck. You can check it out here.He designed the body, interior, and logos for the truck. It's pretty cool. We watched a video about it and I was super impressed. I am so proud of him and all of his accomplishments! Thanks, Alex, for having us! We had a great time and we'll be back soon!!

Shout Out To My Parents

I hate the snow. I hate the winter season in general. The grey, gloomy days make me depressed. BUT, Mitch brought up a good point: the more snow we get, the more Lake Powell will fill up. And that is a happy thought. So this is a shout out to my parents ...
Come on Mom and Dad, you know you want to go to Powell next year!!! Remember how warm the water is? How funny it is to watch the boys fly around on the tube (until someone gets hurt ... )? The candy bar game? The water weenie? Learning to ski? Cranking up the tunes while we bask in the warm sun? Jordan as a "beached whale?" Dad and his awesome ski tricks? Fishing? Crazy games of Dominoes? Catching little lizards and scaring Mom? Cliff jumping? Laughing our heads off? You have to remember how fun it is! We HAVE to go!!!!

The Last Lecture

My MIL, Kathy, has been telling me about The Last Lecture for a while now. She and Kevin gave me the book for graduation and I just finished reading it. (Thanks again!) Randy Pausch, a professor who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, wrote the book. Before he died, Randy gave one last lecture, talking about his childhood dreams and how to live life to the fullest. The book is based off the lecture. You can watch the lecture on YouTube, but I highly recommend reading the book (the book is more in depth).
The book is very inspirational. I didn't agree with every point of view the author had, but, I do think the author is someone who lived life to the fullest, all the time. The book's message: live life to the fullest. That inspires me.

I Did It!

I graduated from college. Holy cow, I can't believe I'm done!! I'm just so happy. Mitch is so sweet and brought me purple and white roses (for WSU) and The Chicago Manual of Style, just what every writer/editor needs. :)
My family was so sweet and came to the (boring, but nice) graduation ceremony. We went to dinner after at T.G.I.Fridays. I
t was a great celebration. Thanks so much Mom and Dad, Grandma's and Grandpa's, Kevin and Kathy, and Hubby for supporting me.

As I was pondering my graduation and what it took to get there, I had a few thoughts. First, I can't believe I finished in exactly four years. That's great considering I switched my major twice. (Secondary education to Social Work to Technical Writing.) Second, there are three things in my life I'll never ever regret:
1. Serving a mission
2. Marrying Mitch
3. Getting my degree
All three things kinda go together. If I hadn't gone to Weber, I wouldn't have met Mitch. If I hadn't gone on a mission, I wouldn't have married Mitch (long story for another day). My mission made me a better student and gave me the self-confidence I needed to do well in school. And marrying Mitch was the best decision ever because he makes me so happy. So, I'm glad I did these things and I am thankful for the opportunities. School was hard at times, but it's worth it. WSU is a great school and I had some awesome, (and some crappy, but mostly awesome) professors.
So what now? How will I fill my endless hours of free time? Honestly, I don't quite know. (I thought about a Master's. That thought went as quickly as it came. First off, there isn't a technical writing Master's program in Utah. Second off, I'm done with school ... forever.) So for now, I'm going to stay at my current job and try some freelance editing jobs on the side. My ultimate career goal is to work from home on freelance jobs, sometimes traveling around the country to meet with executives and write/edit their documents. That would be awesome.
In the mean time, I have some other goals I want to do now that I have time.
  • Finally learn to play the drums
  • Run another 1/2 marathon - Salt Lake 1/2 in April
  • Read books, books, and more books!
  • Visit London, the Baltics, Sweden, Germany, France, Switzerland, and Moscow (someday)
Honestly, I'm just glad that I'm no longer stressed about school. Ahhhhh, what a great sense of accomplishment (and relief)! No more homework, no more finals, no more night classes, no more crazy-know-it-all professors, no more group projects, no more 10 page proposals, no more XML, no more stupid text books, no more, no more, no more!!!

I'm Jealous

Mitch had to go to Cali today for work. (Just for one day; he flew there this morning and will be home tonight.) He texted me and said, "The weather here is great! I don't even need a jacket!" Ya, I'm jealous. I wish I was there. I hate the winter. I texted Mitch back, "We should move there!" Ha, our parents would KILL us!! At least it's sunny today in Utah, right?

When I Turned 25 ...

I learned to roll my R's!! That's right, I spent 18 months as a Russian speaking missionary who couldn't roll her R's. I tried and tried, but to no avail. Last week, I turned the big 2-5 and finally learned how to roll my R's. It went something like this:
  • I woke up
  • Mitch spoiled me with gifts and flowers
  • Mitch made me breakfast and lunch
  • We did a little shopping
  • We ate dinner at a great Thai restaurant
  • We saw "The Forgotten Carols"
  • We ate WAY too much ice cream at Leatherby's
And in the car on the way to Leatherby's (best caramel topping ever, hands down!), I learned to roll my R's. I struggled with this talent my entire life, but especially as a missionary. I just couldn't do it. But on my 25th birthday, Mitch taught me how to roll my R's. ( I can't remember how we started rolling our R's. Mitch must have said something and rolled his R, and I said, "I can't do that." So he taught me.) We were laughing SO hard at my attempts, but I finally got it. I'm not great at it, but I can do it. I just don't understand why Heavenly Father didn't let me learn that trick before my mission. It would have made the Russian language so much easier. I guess He did it that way so I could learn to laugh at myself. It was pretty funny.
I had a great birthday. I was spoiled by everyone. Mitch treated me like a princess the entire weekend. He always treats me like a princess though. He's the best husband a girl could ever hope for. My family had a party for me and my bro, Jordan. His b-day is two days after mine. It was fun and everyone is too generous. Thanks everyone for wishing me a happy birthday and for spoiling me. I love you all!
Here's some pics from the weekend.
Mitch made me a giant pancake
Mitch gave me beautiful roses
Mitch gave me these awesome gym clothes that I wanted.
(He picked them out himself and did a great job!)
My parents gave me this cute hat and scarf
and we had to re-decorate our tree cuz Harvey keeps ruining it
